It is no mystery to anyone, who has got informed lately about ‘Belo Monte’, that, the construction of the plant became a great chance for the government of deviation of funds and over billing, having as an excuse the country energetic needs. The future estimation for a total spent of 42 billions of ‘Reais’ for the construction is a great new for all the politicians and companies involved. Beside of getting us curious about the many farces and events involving the project, like the mysterious quit of the job from the President from IBAMA (who did not approved the project of construction) Abelardo Bayama de Azevedo, and the approval of it 13 days later his resignation, or the EIA-RIMA (Study of environmental impacts – Report of environment impacts) made of a trivial and unfinished way by Eletrobrás.
But, what about the country energetic need? It is a fact that, a country that increases its population by two millions a year, soon or late will need an increase in the energy production, so what can we do? According to the energy Atlas from ‘Aneel’ since 2002 Brazil has an increase of 5% in the annual energy consumption. The Belo Monte plant has a total capacity of producing 11.300MW of potency, disregarding the times of the year when the plant won’t produce its total capacity, let’s see the statistics: According to Célio Bermann, professor in São Paulo’s University and Ex-advisor of Dilma Roussef there is a possibility of retrofit of the 157 already-existing hydroelectric plants in Brazil. Also according to Célio, if we had a repair and replacement of the old pieces form the plants we could have an increase of 8.000MW, a difference of only 3.000MW in compare to Belo Monte. Besides, if we had a repair in the energy transmission, adapting to the international standard, from 15% to 6%, we would have a energetic gain of 6.000MW, a higher number that the hydroelectric could ever produce.
And, what about the native identity? What about their culture and traditions? What will be of a group without culture, land, and so, without means of subsistence? The government creates houses, appropriate means of existence and basic sanitation to a people who won’t have money to maintain it self (since they won’t have lands to the agricultural production).
There is also the question that is a fact, something that even who is friendly to the idea can’t deny; the environmental destruction; there is an estimative that 2 species of fishes get completely extinct.
Concluding the construction aspect this is what we got: A way too expensive project, for a problem that can be solve of another way with less spending and less money that goes somewhere else.
